Merritt steeled himself as Veronica wheeled to gape at him. âLord Rivers?â
âIâm a baron,â he answered grimly and took her arm to lead her into the ballroom.
âYouâre a lord?â she repeated as if she couldnât fathom what that was. âA lord?â
âStunned the daylights out of me, too, I daresay,â he muttered and guided her forward toward the dance floor.
âA baronââ
âIt wasnât my idea to become one.â
ââwho sits in the House of Lords.â
âUnwillingly.â He grimaced. âIf it helps, itâs only a title without any land.â
She stopped him with a sharp tug to his arm. âNo, that doesnât help.â
Damnation. He supposed he deserved this, but why did she have to keep staring at him as if heâd just attempted to kill the king? âIf youâll remember, I told you the night we met that I was a peer of the realm.â
She arched an accusing brow. âYou also told me that you were Mrs. Fitzherbert.â
True. He was beginning to dislike that sharp mind of hers. âThere was no reason to tell you about the barony that night.â
âSo you waited until right now?â
âIt gave us entree to the ball and an opportunity to question Lady Malmesbury.â
Her brow eased down at that bit of far-fetched logic as her lips hardened into a tight line. God help him, he wanted to kiss her mouth until it softened.
âUntil a month ago, I was nothing but an ordinary barrister.â He gave a frustrated roll of his tight shoulders beneath his jacket. âBelieve me, if I could have refused the title, I would have.â
âWhy didnât you?â
âBecause it means a great deal to my father.â And he would do anything for the people he loved. Even become a goddamned peer.
She blinked, not quite able to understand all he was revealing. God knew he barely understood it himself. âButâbut how can you work as a barrister and be a baron?â
âVery carefully.â Heâd never spoken truer words in his life.
âAnd one who prowls the city streets at night with a sword?â
He fixed her with a grave look. âVery carefully.â
When she opened her mouth to challenge him, he took her arm and led her around the perimeter of the room.
âBaron, barrister, Kingâs Counselânone of it matters, donât you understand?â He leaned down to speak privately into her ear, as if they were just another flirtatious couple among the crowd, trying to decide whether to dance or sit out. âWhen people are dying in the streets, what does any of that nonsense matter if innocents canât be saved?â
She didnât look at him, even though he felt her tense on his arm. In her heart, he knew she agreed with him.
âThatâs why youâre working with Clayton Elliott and me to learn about the riots,â he explained, âand why weâre here tonightâto stop innocent victims from being hurt. Thatâs all that matters. The rest of it is merely costume.â
She nodded tightly but kept her gaze straight ahead as she asked, âIs that what I am tonightâa convict in a costume?â
âNo.â What she was tonightâ¦simply breathtaking.
But he didnât dare let himself go there.
